THE countdown is on to the opening of Britain's newest speedway track – and in this week's magazine, we look ahead to the first meeting at Northampton next week. Peter Oakes talks to Foxes' co-promoter Tony Gaul, who reveals: "Personally, I'm doing it as a fan who wants to see speedway stay popular and help grow the sport. We have got to have six clubs in the Premiership. I don't think it was going to work with five. I'd never been to Brafield before but was very keen to meet the stadium manager and I couldn't believe what a great speedway venue it's going to be. My role is to push Northampton Speedway. We handed out 2,000 flyers around the stock car crowd the other weekend and the response was encouraging. Whether they were local residents or stock car fans who travelled, they were saying: 'It's great, we can't wait for speedway to come back here again'."

AGE is no barrier for Freddie Lindgren, who still harbours a burning desire to be crowned World Champion after several near misses in recent years. The Swede will be the elder statesman of the Grand Prix series this summer but in this week's magazine, he reveals: "I saw this study the other day that says your body doesn't deplete until you are 70 years old. You can still, in theory, train like an athlete until you are 70. That was good news to me to see that. But I don’t know. It's a lot – with the training, being away from the family and travelling. It takes a lot out of you. At the moment, I am very motivated. Even on my bad days, I still want to do it, so we will see. Even though I am 40 years old, I still believe I have my best years ahead of me. I'm still trying to get better, improve myself and I think that’s what keeps me going."

BRITAIN'S complicated winter at Premiership level ultimately left one home star on the shelf. Adam Ellis is concentrating his plans elsewhere in 2026 after missing out on a return to champions Ipswich and declining a late offer from newcomers Northampton. In this week's edition, the former British Champion reveals: "It wasn't a question of turning my back on England – I was planning on doing it, 100 per cent. I probably became a bit impatient but I didn't want to miss out on an opportunity because I was waiting to see what happened in England. I tried to find out a few times. I hope I will be back, that's the plan. I'm not turning my back on British speedway; it's been so good to me over the years and I'd like to come back to England at some stage. I'd spoken to Ipswich but it was after I signed in Denmark. After looking at the calendars, I was too busy to commit to the full year. It's a pretty hectic May, June and July. I'm really busy and I didn't want to sign up for too much and turn it into a situation where I was burnt out with all the travelling."

BEN Fund Bonanza ever-present Ben Barker heads north for the big meeting at Glasgow on Saturday looking forward to the season ahead – and what he predicts will be a memorable one for Plymouth. In this week's edition, he reveals: "With speedway, I don't need to do it. I've got to think of my mum and dad. They supported me my whole life. But the hunger is still there and the ambition to win is still there too. We're going to win the league this year. I think it's a very good team and it’s finally time for Plymouth to get our reward for all the hard work that Mark Phillips puts in. The effort and everything is unbelievable."

BELLE VUE'S Dan Bewley got his season off to the perfect start with victory in the Peter Craven Memorial Trophy at the National Speedway Stadium on Monday night. In this week's magazine, he reveals: "My overall target every season is to apply myself the best I feel like I can. In the GPs, we look to have a solid year and see where we're at come the end of it. I just want to enjoy riding my bike, try to get better here and there and pop some wheelies! But this year I am looking forward to the World Cup as well. Ever since I started speedway, I always thought that the World Cup was the coolest meeting, as a fan or a rider, to be honest."

BRITISH speedway will have an exciting addition to the ranks this year after confirmation of Northampton's entry to the Premiership. The new track will boost top flight numbers to six, something British Speedway director Mark Lemon says was vital. In this week's edition, Lemon reveals: "For the integrity and credibility of the sport, running six teams in the league far outweighs having just a five-team competition and the negativity that would create. We were always fully aware of that when we lost Birmingham and Oxford from the Premiership. We all committed at Barnsley in October and the credibility of the sport was of the utmost importance. It was pivotal that we had a sixth team. There have been many challenges and obstacles that have stood in our way towards getting Northampton up and away, but we feel the challenge is warranted to give British speedway a proper tiered structure and a credible Premiership."

THE protracted takeover of Premiership champions Ipswich finally drew to a close this week when Mayfield boss Richard Coleman was unveiled as the Witches' new owner. Coleman, who bought the promotional rights to the Speedway Grand Prix series earlier in the winter, promises a fresh approach and in his first interview since taking charge at Foxhall, he reveals in this week's magazine: "We have to promote the sport in a more dynamic and modern way. It is incumbent on the sport to do better. We are not going to change things overnight, but I would like to think that we are going to start trying to practise what we preach at Ipswich. We have to get younger people into speedway and watching the sport. We need to engage with them on social media – people don't watch linear TV like I did growing up. We consume media in a different way now. I know British speedway has faced a lot of challenges. I am not here to finger-point. I’m here to ask: 'What are we going to do that’s a bit different?'"
